As an asthma sufferer (as well as someone who continuously deals with sinus problems), I rely heavily on the cooling, decongesting properties of menthol to help me breathe easier. Whatever the science, it’s an absolute godsend!
So I thought I would try to somehow capture this refreshing, cooling sensation and translate it into a sound. I tried my best to also utilise objects associated with menthol but ended up using a range of things.
Firstly, I started with a base sound: the rattling and shaking of ice cubes. Then, very faintly, I incorporated high-pitched, airy sounds (the breeze shaking the branches of a tree) to simulate the cooling sensation. I then used my underwater mic and mixed hot water with Vicks VapoRub (a menthol topical ointment here in the UK) to create a much lower, hollower sound. I then ran them through my usual filters. Finally, I used my MIDI keys to play an icy, high-frequency tone to bring it all together. The tone was 528 Hz, one of the healing Solfeggio frequencies, known as the ‘miracle tone’ for its potential to help repair DNA, promote peace and relaxation, and aid in physical healing while reducing stress. Reduced stress can lower respiratory rate and promote deeper, more efficient breathing, which is why I thought it would be the perfect accompaniment to this Menthol Sound.
I loved putting this sound together! I’ve tried it myself and, whether in my head or otherwise, I really found it beneficial for my asthma and helped me get a good night’s sleep.
