Among every group of Africans which Europeans tried to conquer, there were leaders who resisted and fought to retain their freedom. But very few were as successful as Queen Nzingha Mbande who ruled the kingdom of Ndongo in present day Angola. Despite all efforts at conquering her, she ruled for 37 years and was able by her wisdom, diplomacy and military strategy, to keep the Portuguese at bay. Africa and the whole world need to hear her story and celebrate this woman who stood tall not just among men but above men. Nzingha was born around 1583. Her father Kilombo was the Ngola (king) of Ndongo, while her mother was one of her father’s wives.
