So I’ve finally managed to upload the video of some of the best bakeries we visited in NYC in October 2018.. We went to over 30 bakeries in 8 days, and I’ve narrowed them down to 20 that I would happily go back to (good effort, I know!!).

As always, the bakeries were picked based on various awards, recommendations, reviews and most definitely my own preference. Also feel free to give me recommendations for when I go there next :) Also follow my Instagram account @pastrytrail for more bakery content.

The featured bakeries are:

Breads Bakery - the massive bakery in Union Square puts out an equally massive selection of sweet and savoury treats, often with Middle Eastern twists and flavours. As the name suggests, they make great bread, but they also make New York’s best, award-winning babka. It is just amazingly flaky and filled with Nutella and chocolate layers… what is not to love!

Dominique Ansel - of course it is the Cronut that put this bakery firmly on the map. Since it’s launch in 2013 in the Soho branch, the Cronut has become an instant hit and has even sprung up a Cronut black market in New York. You can pre-order yours online as the bakery only makes a limited number of them every day, but all of the other creations in this bakery are delicious and definitely worth a try as well. The bakery filled up with customers pretty quickly after it opened, so be prepared to stand in a line.

Milk Bar - created by Christina Tosi, this American style dessert empire became wildly popular and has stores all over NYC and beyond. You must try their viral desserts, such as the famous Crack Pie that helped Christina shoot to fame; Compost Cookies, cereal milk soft serve and many more!

Almondine - this French bakery in Dumbo is not on a main path or a busy area, but is definitely worth a visit for perfectly executed French classics. We had an almond croissant and a chocolate eclair, and both were superb.

Doughnut plant - this doughnut joint has been making delicious dough treats for decades, regularly bringing out new and seasonal flavours. The menu has over 20 doughnuts so it’s best if you thoroughly analyse it before you go in. Both yeast and cake donuts were equally as good, packing so much flavour with each bite. We tried 6 so far and are considering ordering all 20-something next time we’re in New York, they were that good.

Levain - the tiny bakery churns out some truly legendary cookies. They are Massive and my recommendation would be to share one between two people, but it is hard when you see what’s on offer - we got a cookie each and were full for the next 3 days. Deliciously full.

Little Pie Company - you will smell this bakery before you see it - it fills the street with the most divine pie smell. From your seat you can see the open kitchen where bakers are putting together what look like the biggest pies you’ll see in your life. The cheesecake and pumpkin pies were great here, but we really loved their famous apple, sour cream and walnut pie - could eat it every day.

Orwashers - it was founded by a Hungarian family in 1916, so is one of the longest-running bakeries in NYC. There are many sweet and savoury specialties here (rugelach, bagels, donuts..) but they also make one of the best black & white cookies in New York.

Supermoon Bakehouse - this is one of the newest bakeries in town but has already become wildly popular, on Instagram and in real life. The pastries are highly imaginative in both the look and the flavour combinations, but they are perfectly executed as well. The interior of the cafe is really cool, which means that every customer is taking pictures of their pastries for at least 15 minutes from every angle before they’re eaten, so be prepared for that.

Moishe’s Kosher Bake Shop - The bakery has sadly closed in March 2019, so it was lucky that we got to visit it in October 2018. It was a great example of a traditional Jewish bakery that pretty much hasn’t changed since it was opened around 40 years ago. Their bakes were all about the homemade feel, and there is so much to choose from that you just can’t not find something you like.
