State prosecutors are questioning South Gyeongsang Province Governor Hong Joon-Pyo over allegations that he took illegal funds from a late business tycoon.
Hong appeared at the prosecution's special investigation team in the morning (Friday) to be grilled. He is alleged to have received 100 million won ($92,000) from Sung Wan-Jong, the late former head of Keangnam Enterprises, in 2011 during Hong's run for the presidency of the then ruling party.
Prosecutors reportedly plan to seek a pre-trial arrest warrant for Hong, who they believe has destroyed evidence.
Sung committed suicide last month amid probes into his alleged embezzlement charges. He left a memo carrying a list of eight political heavyweights who he alleged took illegal money from him. Hong was one of them.
