There are two new players in the CPU/APU town, the Ryzen 7 5700G and Ryzen 5 5600G, which fill some significant gaps in the Ryzen 5000 series processor family. Both are based on the latest Zen 3 microarchitectures but use an older generation integrated graphics solution, based on Vega, with some updates to meet today's needs.

The new Cezanne silicon is built on 7-nanometer lithography, and the Ryzen 5000 series mobile CPUs also use it. It has a monolithic die instead of the chiplets used on the desktop 5000 CPUs, featuring 8-cores/16 threads in the 5700G and 6-cores/12 threads in the 5600G, along with a Vega GPU with up to eight Compute units (seven in the 5600G).

The base price of the 5700G is 360 dollars, while the 5600G costs 100 dollars less. Both have 65W TDP, use the AM4 socket, so there are plenty of cooling solutions available for them, and their L3 cache is limited to 16 MB, which is half of what the 5800X and 5600X have. Another major difference between the latter and the 5000G models is the lack of a PCIe 4.0 interface. The 5000G line comes with PCIe 3.0, which will restrict NVMe drives that use PCIe 4.0. Finally, both APUs have unlocked multipliers.

If you play old titles, don't play at high resolutions, and don't need high details to enjoy a game, the 5600G will probably make you happy until you manage to buy a dedicated GPU. If I were you, though, I would get a 5600x and a used Nvidia 1060 or 1070, a combo packing much more gaming power. That said, the price-to-performance ratio of the 5600G is high in both CPU-related and gaming tasks.

The 5600G is ideal for office PCs where a strong GPU is not necessary. Moreover, thanks to its low energy demands, it will keep power consumption low, and you won't need a strong cooling solution to keep its operating temperatures in control. I was amazed at how low the power consumption is compared to a 5800x, even when I pushed the APU hard, overclocking both the CPU and the iGPU while increasing voltage to both. For sure, the 5600G is an interesting SoC that puts AMD into the retail embedded graphics market, too.
