Annie Sellick, Pat Bergeson & Tommy Emmanuel meet Dr. Dum d'Dum -- The Nearness of You.
Remember when YouTube was like a magic kingdom where fabulous musical creativity abounded, and was freely shared without the involvement of any record company or entertainment conglomerate?
Well, return with us now to 2005. It's a small jazz club somewhere in Europe, and three wildly talented musicians -- all with great futures ahead of them, and all very good friends -- are performing in a setting so intimate and relaxed that you might call it a "living room" atmosphere.
So there's a glass of red wine on the stool next to Tommy Emmanuel when Pat Bergeson begins his solo electric guitar intro to his wife, Annie Sellick's, version of The Nearness of You. (Did you notice it in the photo?) Thirty seconds later, everyone can tell there is real magic in the air.
"That chord isn't on my guitar!" Tommy Emmanuel exclaims admiringly while the last notes of Pat Bergeson's intro solo are still ringing.
All three of them laugh -- as does the audience -- and then Annie Sellick launches into what I believe is the definitive version of Hoagy Carmichael's great jazz standard, The Nearness of You. The voice, the interpretation, and the EMOTION that Annie Sellick brings to the song are exquisite and deeply moving.
And she was supported at each elbow that evening by the stunning electric and acoustic guitars of Pat Bergeson and Tommy Emmanuel, both of whom played their hearts out for her.
This version -- with the electric bass of Dr. Dum d'Dum added to subtly fill out and weave together the sound of the two guitars and single female voice -- is an excerpt from the full original live recording at [ Ссылка ]. This electric bass-powered excerpt begins with Tommy Emmanuel's soulful solo and runs through the conclusion, where Tommy Emmanuel's spontaneous "Wow!" says it all about Annie Sellick's performance.
And the good news is that the original version is twice as long as this one! I really urge you to check it out at [ Ссылка ]. If you've never seen lightning in a bottle before, this is what it looks like!
