👉🏽On this fifth episode — Day 5, …we leave the Bryce Canyon area and travel south to Kanab, Utah. While on the way, we stop by the famous Thunderbird Restaurant in Mount Carmel, Utah, to taste-test their famous "Ho-made Pies." Joy got the thunderberry (various berry mixture) pie, but I had to go with the all-American classic... apple pie.

Who knew that Utah was well-known for having good pies !

Why "Ho-made" and not "Homemade ?" - We learned that when Jack Morrison made the first "home made" sign for the restaurant, but he didn't have enough room to spell out the words, so he shortened it to the folksier sounding “Ho-Made” ...and that iconic "Pie-Girl," what's the story behind her ? She was modeled after his favorite girl (& wife), Fern Morrison ...the rest is 93 years of "Ho-made" history.

As we continue south on our drive into Kanab, we stop at the Moqui Sand Caves, man-made caves from a sand mining operation many years ago. That's it..... nothing more than that. So now, it's a tourist stop and challenge to climb up to them.

After leaving Moqui Sand Caves, we travel a few miles down the road to see if we can find another tourist draw..."Dinosaur Tracks" up on top of a Mesa. We did successfully find many sets !

Climbing back down we then drive the 5 miles into Kanab, grad a late lunch at a Taco Food-truck...outstanding. They almost always are!

Tacos, ice cream, & visiting some shops in the town, we begin our short drive to Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, our camp location for the night.

The park features uniquely very fine pink-hued sand dunes located beside red sandstone cliffs and was almost powdery in texture.

The dunes are formed from the erosion of pink-colored Navajo Sandstone surrounding the park. High winds passing through the notch between the Moquith and Moccasin Mountains pick up loose sand particles and then drop them onto the dunes as a result of the Venturi effect.

Stay tuned for the next episode…. we leave the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park very early, driving the desert before dawn's light, toward Zion National Park as we have an appointment to hike Angels Landing. One of the most dangerous treks in the USA. In fact, it is so dangerous that the National Park Service has to limit the quantity of people through a permitting system to prevent overcrowding and keep people from falling 1,000s of feet to their demise !

We got our permits to give it a shot...! Will we be successful in our attempt or will we turn back? Make sure to tune into the next episode to find out.
