I normally use a 2-part epoxy like PC7 or PC11 but this hardware didn't have one, so I used this one. They're maybe $10 or so... or less. If you're changing a big amount, and think you want more I would just buy 2 just in case, one pack for each foot.
You need a sole-shape template to go off of. This case, we had two different size feet, so we created one for each foot. Normally I use the same pattern for both feet, and flip the pattern to use. Whatever you are changing, you just add to make it the shape of your template.
No need to add much to the bottom, as you want the bottom to be flat.
And the top of the last, try to transition the epoxy into the surface of the last. It's hard- and as it gets stiffer as time goes, it gets harder and harder to smooth...so... at some point you have to let it go.
You can add more, and sand it down later, but the less sanding to do, the easier on you.
Hand-sanding would be ideal, but if you have way too much material you can also sand down with a sander/line finisher.
I use a rough/corse sandpaper, + nail filers. Especially when working with square toes- the straight surfaces, the nail filers came in handy.
Total time- it took maybe 30 minutes from start to finish. Then had to let it dry 3 hours or so. We didn't have much time, so we made midsole component while the last dried. And when we sanded it roughly, we taped up the last to make the pattern for the upper. We also added wood filler (not wood glue), to the top surface and smoothed the crevices. But it's not ideal because I can't seal the material, and that material, especially when wet lasting, it can transfer back onto the lining. And you don't want any of that.
I did that also because the material we were using was rather thin, and didn't want to see too much of the bumps.
In the end, the shoes came out great- We wet-lasted the upper because we were basically Crimping the leather directly onto the last... and that was difficult, and not recommended on adjusted toes. One I was working on, I pulled too much and I think the shape warped a bit while working on it. You can see the final results on instagram, it's a two-different toe colored- square toe dorsey heel.
Thanks for watching!
