Capturing an illegal drone in flight is an enormous challenge, especially in parts of the world where there are restrictions on the use of force and jamming technology. To address this issue we have developed AeroSnare.
AeroSnare is an easy to use, low cost device which provides a basic drone capture capability for police forces with an existing drone fleet. Securely attached to a drone (any drone but specifically designed for the Mavic and DJI M200 series) It uses a drag-line which is slung underneath the friendly drone. The friendly drone then flies over the hostile drone with a view to entangling the drone’s propellers in the drag-line. Once the offending drone is entangled it stalls and falls out the sky, this process it pulls a parachute out of the friendly drone so the hostile drone land slowly with little force (sub 69 joules for drones under 3.5kg).
AeroSnare is not meant to be a silver bullet, it is designed to provide some capability where none currently exists as part of a range of countermeasures. Unlike some other drone capture devices, it requires no firearms license, it is not export controlled, it will not anger animal rights activists, it does not require a mid-air collision and it doesn’t come with a five figure price tag. AeroSnare is the perfect device in some circumstances, and anything which introduces an element of doubt in a would be illegal drone flyer should be welcomed by law enforcement officers and the drone industry alike.
With some basic training a competent drone operator can quickly learn how to use the device and safely capture hostile drones.
