Those who experience Intimacy Anorexia from their spouse, which is the act of withholding emotionally, spiritually, and sexually from your significant other, feel alone and disconnected. The pain and even trauma they go through is hard to bear. However, through the 12 Steps program, those who are married & alone can heal and move forward in life. In this video, Dr. Doug Weiss, licensed psychologist and national author, walks you through Step Four.
With Step Four, it's about having made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. It's a process of doing some internal searching of yourself, realizing your heart, your past, your motives, and your own story in life. You may wonder why you are doing this step if it was your partner that was doing the withholding and not connecting with you. Yes, they did those things to you. However, similar to if you were in a car with someone who caused an accident, while you were just the passenger, you were still injured. It's up to you to get healing and do physical therapy that's necessary for you to get better.
You must spend time doing an inventory of yourself, independent of anyone else in your life. This is about you. From your search results, you will use it to create a moral inventory and separate the stuff into a good, bad, and ugly column.
With the good column, it's about great decisions you made and the good you did for yourself and others.
The bad column of the inventory lists the decisions you made that weren't the best, had negative consequences for you, and hurt those around you. However, even if you made bad decisions, it doesn't mean that you're bad.
With the ugly column, that's the stuff that happened to you that you had no control over or responsibility for. Things that impacted your life for the worse including your spouse's withholding, a bad family of origin, trauma, abuse, accidents that happened to you, etc. These things may have impacted the decisions you make.
Don't dwell on this step for too long. Choose to be fearless and honest with this inventory. Do the work and move onto Step Five. Continue to stay connected with others and get support so you can move forward in this healing process.
