It can be difficult to deal with negative behaviors at times, so developing a plan be very effective for improving a child’s behaviors.
First; determine WHY the child is behaving the way they are (so that you can address it appropriately),
Next, have at least 2 reactions for every type of behavior (make the punishment meet the crime. More severe behaviors may result in time out, spankings, etc. and more minor behaviors may have less significant consequences such as having something taken away, ignoring or not giving attention... in cases such as having a tantrum... or simply redirecting and giving them other things to focus on. It is so important to respond to the behaviors based on a combination of severity AND reason behind the behavior
Third, determine the most frequent negative behaviors exhibited by your child (such as yelling/tantrums, hitting, not listening or doing what they are told, etc). And determine the typically reasons behind each. After you know this, you can develop a plan for each behavior including 2 responses for each behavior in case one doesn’t work, then you can try the second option.
Lastly, stick to the plan! Be consistent. Get others on board with the plan!
Good luck! :)
