West country whipping sometimes called west county whipping is knot number 3458 in The Ashley Book of Knots (AboK). It is traditionally tied as shown with half knots and finished with a reef knot or square knot. However to make the whipping more secure there is the option of starting the whipping with a constrictor knot and finishing it off with a surgeon’s knot or another constrictor.

Uses/Application:
It is mainly used to tie an the end of a rope to keep it from fraying. It can also be use on tool handles as a grip.

Advantages:
Very easy to learn. If part of the whipping breaks the whole whipping does not fall apart as is the case with some other whipping, as each half-knot has to let go in succession.

Disadvantages
Can be a bit tedious to tie.
