The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert in Gujarat as the Narmada River surpasses the danger mark. Heavy rainfall has led to the closure of primary schools, with over 1,600 people rescued and 17,000 relocated. In Ahmedabad, severe waterlogging has been reported, and 523 roads are closed across affected districts.
Thirteen NDRF and 22 SDRF teams are deployed, and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel is overseeing relief operations. In Tripura, the flood death toll has risen to 26, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledging Rs 40 crores for relief.
The IMD forecasts heavy rainfall for Goa, Maharashtra, and Karnataka in the coming days. A deep depression over east Rajasthan is expected to impact South Rajasthan, Gujarat, Saurashtra, Kutch, and parts of Pakistan. Another low-pressure area over Bangladesh and Gangetic West Bengal may affect Odisha and Jharkhand. A red alert is in effect for several regions until August 29, with Kerala also expecting isolated heavy rains.
