Most people our age know Devils Tower from the popular 70's movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind. This lone monolith in Black Hills National Forest in Wyoming towers over the surrounding hills like a beacon.
This area has long been sacred land to the native people and while they have celebrations here throughout the year, June is set aside as a month to respect their land and more specifically the tower. It is voluntary no climbing month and is observed by most climbers.
The long horizontal cracks in the tower is a favorite among rock climbers and is enjoyed the rest of the year by climbers. The record climb is just over 18 minutes!!
This is a special place being the first National Monument declared by Theodore Roosevelt in 1906.
