...Naa then firebugs !
.
...So managed to get out & get the stone age bow drill done. Using only stone tools really takes a lot more time than using even the crudest metal blade. I guess this time took around two & a half hours including the time taken making the tools & cord. A bit better than my last attempt where it took all afternoon.
.
...Even simple stone tools can get the job done it just takes longer so don't get impatient or frustrated. Take your time & know that every bit of wood you remove gets you a little bit closer to getting the set done. Don't cut corners do it right & do it once. Your patient endeavours will be rewarded when those flames appear in your hands.
.
...Every thing went pretty smoothly with this attempt apart from battling for a short while with the pebble I was using as the bearing block. The divot in it wasn't deep enough & the and of the spindle rounded off & kept slipping out. Easily sorted though by switching to a wooden hand hold, lubricated with a green leaf & a bit of spit, I got the job done in no time.
.
...No idea what the wood was for the set but that doesn't matter. In a survival situation you would just have to evaluate whether its dry enough & of the correct density. Knowing what it is could help but if you had no idea you'd just have to trust your instincts like I did here.
.
...As I've said before its a humbling experience that leaves you with a great feeling of accomplishment & to think none of us would be here today without this simple technology .... Incredible......
.
..Go & grab ya rocks & get bashing away guys..
.
...catch ya soon guys
