Pain at the back of the tongue can be for multitude of reasons. It can be as simple as a trauma, when you are chewing something and you have bitten your tongue accidentally, although biting so posteriorly is not very common. In any case when you have a bite of the tongue, the pain can be reflected posteriorly also. You can have a small infection of the throat like tonsillitis which can cause pain in back of the tongue. While chewing food some sharp object would have pierced at the back of the tongue, that can also cause persisting pain at the back of the tongue. There can be some trauma which could have happened and you have taken some foreign body or some foreign object. In any case if you have persisting pain in the back of the tongue make sure that you take some painkillers which are over the counters and if it doesn’t get better in a cook of days, it is necessary in your own good that you consult your ENT doctor as soon as possible.
