Our apartment was a cold little place
Where I became lost in your cold little face
You'd always come by around midnight
We'd stare in the dim of the half-light
Sometimes you told me you were frightened
Sometimes you said you were alone
I'd wrap you up in silk and eiderdown
And make you feel like you had a home
By Saint-Jacques and Saint-Michel we two fell
Where ten thousand lie close to heaven or hell
We set hearts aflame when we walked the Rue
With 'Salut' replacing 'How do you do'
You sometimes skipped cracks in the pavement
You sometimes called me on the phone
I read you Paul and Arthur's words
And made you feel like you had a home
Those Parisian summers were breezy and warm
We would lie like tigers on Isabelle's lawn
But when the frost crept in for November
We'd lock ourselves away together forever
Sometimes you smiled like Anna Karina
Sometimes you smiled like Saint Joan
We'd drink until we could both barely see
And I'd make you feel like you had a home
I read my old books in all kinds of weather
On our stained mattress with peacock feathers
And you taught yourself to foxtrot and jive
And watching you I've never felt more alive
You sometimes stared as if you saw through me
Sometimes you were as stern as a stone
I'd bring you cocoa and breakfast in bed
And make you feel like you had a home
Our apartment is a cold little place
Where I never see your cold little face
It's always quietest at midnight
I stare in the dim of the half-light
Sometimes you kissed me like a wife
Sometimes you'd kiss me and you'd moan
I wrap myself head to toe in our bedsheets
Because without you I have no home
