From the very beginning, Havana assessed the ongoing events outlining absolutely correct and true reasons for what had begun and what the West had been preparing for many years. STORYLINE:
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met Wednesday with his Cuban counterpart Bruno Eduardo Rodríguez Parrilla in Moscow.
The meeting comes as Russian warships are heading to visit Cuba, as part of Moscow’s efforts to project power amid the tensions with the West over Ukraine.
The Cuban Foreign Ministry said the Russian warships will be in Havana between Wednesday and June 17, noting that none will carry nuclear weapons and assuring their presence “does not represent a threat to the region.”
Lavrov thanked Cuba for their "principled" position on the conflict in Ukraine that Havana has been promoting at various events including within the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
"From the very beginning, Havana assessed the ongoing events outlining absolutely correct and true reasons for what had begun and what the West had been preparing for many years," Lavrov said.
Cuba is a member of the NAM which was formed during the collapse of the colonial systems and at the height of the Cold War, and has played a key part in decolonization processes, according to its website. Member countries aspire not to be formally aligned with or against any major power bloc.
Russian forces fired missiles and drones at the Kyiv region and five other areas of Ukraine in a nighttime attack, officials said Wednesday, ahead of several days of intense diplomatic activity around the war that is now in its third year.
