Taylor Townsend broke new Grand Slam ground at US Open 2019, reaching the Round of 16 for the first time. Her stunning upset over reigning Wimbledon champion and world No. 4 Simona Halep in Round 2 saw her overcome doubters and set up a Round 3 clash with Romania's Sorana Cirstea. A straight-set win there saw Townsend progress to Round 4 where she would meet eventual winner Bianca Andreescu.
