This is the 15th installment of the Complete 2009 CrossFit Games videos, and the fourth part of the women’s competition. Here is complete coverage of the women’s row/sledge event.
The hopper model tests an athlete’s ability to perform proficiently at random physical challenges. Along those lines, the fourth event required the women to drive a three-foot-long blunt stake into evenly packed ground with an 8-lb. sledgehammer. To complicate matters, the stake drive was bookended by 500-meter rows.
Sarah Dunsmore proved quickest at the task, finishing in 5:33. Katie Hogan followed with 5:43, and Carey Kepler was right behind her at 5:50. In the first heat, Nicole Gordon smashed her finger between the handle and the stake. She stuck with it and finished in spite of the pain and the blood. Her experience, though, was a warning to the other athletes to be extra careful.
