Empathy may seem like a common sense solution to the world’s most pressing issues. But what Katelyn Carey argues is that, as a threat assessment tool, empathy is not only ineffective—it’s actually part of the problem. Calling upon her experience as a burn patient, mastectomy patient and acute care nurse, Carey identifies the hidden flaws of empathy in and out of healthcare. She argues that compassion is, in fact, the superior tool, one that has led her to think beyond her own experiences and better support the people around her. Katelyn Carey is a nurse, author, and award-winning speaker who has worked in acute care and healthcare education for over twenty years. From bedside care in trauma certified ER’s and in the PICU/NICU units of a children’s hospital, to running the residency program for ICU and CCU for a multi-hospital system, Katelyn has supported thousands of patients and providers during traumatic times. She specializes in educational support around resiliency and recovery, as well as crisis communication and team/self care. Katelyn has spent the last decade studying cognitive science and trauma-informed-care principles. Using her experiences as both a patient and a nurse, Katelyn blends science with compassion to improve communication, education, and recovery for patients, caregivers, and community members. She excels in turning complex science concepts into accessible and easily processed strategies.
