Past Week in Turkey (November 16-22)
After hosting the international G20 summit, Turkey returned to deal with issues within: to form a new government following the recent snap elections. But soon, it’s attention was diverted once again. The joint offensive of Russia and Syria on Turkmen villages close to the border posed a new challenge to Turkish foreign policy. And that challenge became greater, after Turkey shot down a Russian warplane for violating its airspace.
Oath-taking ceremony of 26th parliament
The week begun with the opening of the 26th parliament of Turkey and newly elected members taking their oaths. All the deputies made the pledge “before the great Turkish nation,” as is stated in the parliamentary oath. Except for one. Leyla Zana of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP). She had previously taken an oath in Kurdish back in 1991. But this time, her oath did not adhere to the official text. And the acting speaker of parliament rejected it. While taking the oath, Zana also change d the words "the Turkish nation" to "the people of Turkey".
Turkey’s new cabinet is approved
In the days that followed, Turkey’s new deputies gathered once more to elect a speaker of parliament. And they chose AK Party deputy Ismail Kahraman to fill the second highest position in the Turkish state. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan then met with Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu to discuss Turkey’s cabinet for the next four years. After receiving the approval of the president, prime minister Davutoglu announced the new cabinet. It has a total of five deputy prime ministers, one up from previous cabinets. They are Numan Kurtulmus, Mehmet Simsek, Yalcin Akdogan, Tugrul Turkes and Lutfi Elvan. For the first time in Turkish parliamentary history, the cabinet also has two female ministers.
