The Kennedy Space Center (KSC) is a NASA installation on Merritt Island, Florida, that supports the nation's space program1. It was established in 1961 to launch the Apollo Lunar Landing Program2. It was originally called the Launch Operations Center, but was renamed in 1963 in honor of President John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated that year3,4. It has been the departure site for hundreds of spacecraft, including the first journey to the Moon and the Space Shuttle1. It was activated as a lunar launch center 50 years ago today5.
