Wagner: “Du bist der Lenz” and “Mild und leise (Liebestod)” by Lotte Lehmann 1930
00:00 Wagner: Die Walküre: “Du bist der Lenz”
01:51 Wagner: Tristan und Isolde: “Mild und leise (Liebestod)”
Members of the Berlin State Opera Orchestra conducted by Frieder Weissmann
Recorded: June 18, 1930
A beautiful Royal Blue Columbia copy (originally on Odeon O-8745) of this record that is quiet and in near mint condition. The record is made a bit oddly as it has two Wagner arias from two different operas. Wagner’s Du bist der lenz from Die Walküre on side one followed by the beginning Wagner’s Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde. Side 2 then continues with the rest of the Liebestod. In any case, a really terrific record of the always fabulous Lotte Lehmann. I decided to include both arias in one video presentation rather than two. It is how the record was presented so why not the video?
Lotte Lehmann (1888-1976) is buried in Vienna’s main cemetery, the Zentralfriedhof. On her tombstone are inscribed the words of Richard Strauss: “Sie hat gesungen, dass es Sterne rührte.” (“She sang, and the stars were moved.”)
