A meniscus (plural - menisci) is a type of cartilage located specifically in our knee joints - the ones that look like horseshoes, sandwiched between our femurs (thigh bone) and tibias (lower leg bone).
Cartilage is a connective tissue found in many areas of our body including joints such as elbows, knees and ankles. It's softer and more flexible than bone.
Menisci act as shock absorbers and provide stability to our knees. They can be susceptible to tears if we constantly participate in activities that require us to pivot or change directions. They're also subject to wear and tear as we age.
This episode addresses a question my patients always ask me when they tear their menisci, "Do I need surgery to fix my meniscus?"
