Greetings from Batchcott Cottage, hidden in the wooded hills above the ancient market town of Ludlow and simply known as 'The Cottage', stands on the grounds of what was once a medieval granary. This cosy thatched retreat, overlooked by the imposing Mortimer Forest, sleeps up to four and offers views of the Malvern Hills from its peaceful, pheasant-frequented garden. We've spent our days curled up and reading by the wood burner, wandering the winding paths of Mortimer Forest and exploring the narrow, timber-framed streets of Ludlow's old quarter and its ruined thirteenth century castle.
Batchcott was built in the 16th century from timber, wattle and daub, with a hole in the roof acting as a chimney for its central fire. The family would sleep on the upper floor, climbing to their beds with a ladder, while their animals slept below. In the 18th century the cottage was expanded, with a bread oven built in the inglenook fireplace, hence the name Batchcott (bread supplier's cottage).
We had such a relaxing few days, and it was a real treat waking up to birdsong from the garden every morning.
