Strappado, also known as corda, is a notorious method of torture that originated in medieval Italy and became widely used across Europe, particularly during the Inquisitions. This brutal practice was employed primarily by the Catholic Church to extract confessions or punish heretics and other accused individuals. During the Inquisitions, which spanned from the 12th to the 18th centuries, the Church sought to root out heresy and enforce religious conformity, often justifying the use of torture methods like strappado as necessary measures to protect the faith.
Method of Torture
The strappado technique involved various steps, each designed to maximize pain and suffering while extracting information or confessions from the victim. Typically, the process began with the victim's hands being bound behind their back. The person was then hoisted off the ground by a rope attached to their wrists, creating immense strain on the shoulders and arms.
In many cases, weights were added to the victim's feet to increase the severity of the pain. The intense pressure on the shoulder joints often led to dislocation, tearing of ligaments, and nerve damage. Victims could be left hanging for extended periods, causing further physical and psychological torment.
There were variations of the strappado method, including the "simple strappado," where the victim was hoisted off the ground and left to hang, and the "reverse strappado," where the victim was suspended with their arms tied in front and the body facing upwards. Regardless of the variation, the goal was the same: to inflict unbearable pain and coerce the victim into compliance or confession.
