Hawkeye has been big on deaf representation so far, with Clint losing his hearing, just like in Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye run, and the addition of Echo, a deaf, native American character.
To stay true to the character, Marvel cast a deaf actor, rather than have someone pretend to be deaf, which has been very positively received by fans and critics alike.
It has now been revealed that both Jeremy Renner & Hailee Steinfeld learned some ASL (American Sign Language) to make Cox feel welcome on set.
In an interview, Cox explained: “I remember meeting Jeremy on my first day of work on-set; I was a nervous wreck, as this was my very first acting job,”.
“He then complimented me in American Sign Language (ASL), which comforted me,”
Hailee Steinfeld got in on the action, too, who also learned some basic ASL to communicate with Cox.
Cox said: “I thought it was sweet of them putting in efforts to learn basic ASL to communicate with me. It means a lot to me as a Deaf person,”.
It seems Marvel have been doing a lot for deaf representation for this year, and here’s hoping this continues into the future!
