Who do you love? 👁💛✨ Here's the 80s version of "Behind The Mask" by Michael Jackson! 🕺🏾🎭💃🏾 In celebration of Thriller 40, I will confirm that this will be appearing on the Captain EO Soundtrack - an album that I've had finished since 2021, around the same time as the Forever album (aside from this song). Due to tour + other material causing me to delay it, I haven't released it yet... but in 2023, it will be released. 💣 Yes, TWO albums coming next year. ✌🏾 This has been done since September, although I quickly went back to it for Thriller 40 reasons. 😏🎤 Be sure to check out the 7" edit + 12" extended mix, which are both available on the page. 💿 Enjoy! 😎🤘🏾🖤 Stay tuned… ♾
Get it while it's hot! 🔥 Seriously, I know some, if not most or all of these songs may get axed by "them" at any moment, so please use the download links well and share the music (album/songs) with your friends so that the Groove'n'Funk never truly goes away. Thank you! 🖤

The final version of “Behind The Mask” was leaked by American producer Eulonzo on November 18th, 2022, on the same day of the release of the 40th Anniversary Edition of the Thriller album, in which Michael’s original demo from 1982 was released. It was unknown this version existed.
Although fans are familiar with the released version from the “Michael” album in 2010, as well as other versions throughout the years, it has been revealed that “Behind The Mask” (rumored to be initially titled “The Mask”) was re-recorded between 1985-1987 during sessions for the Captain EO Soundtrack which remains unreleased, as well as during the Bad sessions, at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angelos, and partially at Flyte Time Studios in Minneapolis with his sister Janet Jackson, along with some production help of not only Joe Kehr, but the production duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. This was worked on around the same time as the original versions of “Another Part Of Me”, as well as “Streetwalker”, “Give In To Me”, and “Deep In The Night” - all of those done primarily at Westlake.
This version started off as a musical collaborative effort between Michael & The Rag Tag Band, Janet, Joe Kehr and production duo Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, who were looking to embark on an album with Janet by this point, as well as work with Michael. It’s believed that the original elements of “Another Part Of Me” come from this song. As noted, this version was also intended for the Captain EO Soundtrack, but was quickly shelved once the song evolved into “Another Part Of Me”, which also featured in the film and considered for the soundtrack.
Michael, Janet, Jimmy & Terry, Joe Kehr are all providing background vocals throughout the track, plus members of The Rag Tag Band. The song is written by Michael, Janet, Joe, Jimmy & Terry collectively. He began working further on this version from 1985-1987 with Jimmy & Terry, Joe and Janet, and was planned for release as a promotional single, along with a short film to accompany it.
While the song runs under 5 minutes, there are multiple edits of the track. The LP version is 4:51, while the extended / full-length version is 9:05. This is due to Michael, Janet, Jimmy & Terry, Joe and The RTB experimenting and jamming with the song, with extra sections and adlibs. Due to time constraints, the song was edited down to multiple versions to potentially fit on a vinyl if they ever decided to put it on any album.
While they all liked this version, Quincy felt that the song had “too much going on” at the time, therefore he felt that it wasn’t good enough for the Captain EO Soundtrack. There was also brief tension between Quincy and Joe due to a playful dig at another musician/producer in the extended version, which he did not approve of. Joe insisted that it was all in good fun, but Quincy and others weren’t too pleased.
After ultimately deciding that he was going to shelve it, Michael shortly gave this version to Janet, so that she, Jimmy & Terry could rework it the way that they wanted to. Shortly after, the song evolved into “When I Think of You”, which became a standout track for Janet’s second album “Control” in 1986. The Estate would later on revisit the song many years later in 2010 and released it posthumously for the Michael album in 2010. And just recently, they released Michael’s original demo on the 40th Anniversary Edition of the Thriller album in 2022.
