Iceland Spar Calcite is a mineral made of calcium carbonate. It is a type of calcite that is completely colorless or clear so you can see through the crystals. Crystals of Iceland Spar Calcite have a rhombohedral shape meaning they look like a slanted cube. Calcite forms in water environments or caves. When the mineral comes in contact with an acid like hydrochloric acid, lemon juice, or vinegar, it will react by fizzing or forming bubbles, on the crystal surface. Iceland Spar Calcite has rhombohedral cleavage and a conchoidal fracture which can create a spiral pattern on the surface of the crystal when it is broken. Iceland Spar Calcite is soft at only a 3 on the Mohs hardness scale, has a white streak and a glassy or pearly luster. Iceland Spar Calcite is useful in the manufacture of microscopes, building materials, fertilizers, and materials in the chemical industry. The most unique feature of Iceland Spar Calcite is that objects like print or pictures will appear doubled when you look at them through the crystal.
