Watch the wing flex during heavy turbulence! Why does a 787 wing flex so much? Can it break?
On our return flight back to London Heathrow from New Delhi we experience a scary heavy turbulence shaking the wings violently in clear sky. I managed to capture part of the turbulence which shows how flexible the wings are and partly this helps reduce the effect of turbulence.
Why does Boeing 787 have a wing flex?
It's due to its flexible carbon fiber material that can stretch.
Can a 787's wing break off?
That is unlikely to ever happen as inside the wings are hidden strong support system.
How much can a Boeing 787 wing flex?
During the test, the Boeing 787 wings were flexed approximately 25 feet upwards, that's 150% of the extreme forces the aircraft will ever encounter.
Boeing 787 wing design certainly helps during the turbulence as we can see the wing flex is doing a great job. Constant adjustments to the flaperon seems like the plane's flying on autopilot.
