The waters surrounding Portugal’s Azores archipelago harbor some of the most important nearshore, open-water and deep-sea ecosystems in the North Atlantic. But this marine paradise teeters on the brink, threatened by the pressures of overfishing. In 2018, National Geographic's Pristine Seas team conducted a scientific expedition in partnership with the Oceano Azul Foundation, the Waitt Foundation, and the Regional Government of the Azores to explore the waters around the least known areas of the western Azores - including never before surveyed seamounts.
