When war erupted in Ukraine on the 24th of February, the Hungarian government and citizens, in common with neighbouring countries, immediately mobilized to offer sanctuary, warm beds, hot food and medical care to the refugees.
Recognizing that healthcare was an urgent and ongoing priority, health authorities decided to extend the same level of care to Ukrainian refugees as enjoyed by their own citizens. Although many patients’ ailments were due to their arduous journey, some needed more specialist, longer term care.
The WHO Country Office in Hungary has been working collaboratively with health authorities to ensure that Ukrainian refugees in Hungary have been able to access healthcare through capacity building and collaboration on health policy.
