Today our Founder, Jhillika Kumar, received a disheartening comment in response to her brother Vikram’s poem stating “It’s not really him writing, just so you know.”
It reminded her of the importance of advocating for non speaking individuals whose voices often go unheard.
Vikram is an individual who could not communicate reliably for the first 27 years of his life.
Growing up, she watched with her own eyes how Vik worked so hard for 6 months of therapy sessions to get his body to comply to get his fingers to type on a letter-board.
During the extensive research at Georgia Tech under the advisorship of Professor Gregory Abowd, Jhillika wrote my undergraduate thesis on eye-gaze tracking demonstrating cognition for non speaking autistic individuals.
This topic is really important to Jhillika as well as the millions of nonspeakers.
The Mentra team is so glad for her to have had the chance to film a lot of this advocacy work with spellers and shed light on these important stories of how Spelling 2 Communicate / Rapid Prompting Method have truly transformed lives.
Yes, it really is him expressing himself.
