And let’s get started!
The Rheinmetall Landsysteme, a part of Rheinmetall's Vehicle Systems division, developed the Lynx armored fighting vehicle. On June 14, 2016, the Lynx was publicly unveiled as a KF31 infantry fighting vehicle at the Eurosatory defense exhibition.
According to Rheinmetall, the Lynx tracked armored vehicle family is at the forefront of a new trend in IFV design toward armored vehicles with lower unit and through-life costs and reduced complexity. One of the key principles of the Lynx concept is the integration of proven subsystems with a high level of technological readiness to reduce development time, cost, and technical risk.
The Lynx's defense is designed to be scaled according to the threat. Although exact details are classified, the vehicle's ballistic steel armor is designed to protect the Lynx from anti-tank weapons, medium-caliber ammunition, artillery shrapnel, and bomblets. The interior is equipped with a spall liner to protect the crew, as well as decoupled seats and mine and IED protection packages that include a double floor.
The standard armor configuration is known as the Mounted Combat Operations (MCO) kit, and it is designed to protect vehicles from similarly armed opponents. It is understood that an advanced passive component should be combined with active protection systems.
The second kit is called the Complex Urban Environment (CUE) kit, and it does not contain any active protection elements. Lynx is said to be available with an additional armor kit that can be used for air transportation, allowing it to deploy directly from a transport aircraft.
Rheinmetall's Active Protection System AMAP-ADS can provide additional active protection against shaped-charge warhead attacks, in addition to a variety of passive protection and defensive aids. A rapid obscuration system, a laser warning system, and an acoustic shot locator system are among them. When equipped, these are integrated into the Lance turret, along with automatic target recognition and tracking.
An environmental control system stowed in the rear-located left sponson in front of the cooling system combines the heating, cooling, nuclear, biological, and chemical filtration systems. Air ducts connect to the floor and an air duct interface at the hull's top end.
The vehicle was outfitted with a Lance turret mounting a stabilized, externally powered autocannon of 30 mm or 35 mm caliber, with airburst munition support. This enables the Lynx to engage targets at distances of up to 3,000 meters, both stationary and moving. The main armament of the vehicle has an elevation range of +45 to +10 and a controlled rate of fire of 200 rounds per minute.
The latest Rheinmetall Machine Gun (RMG) 7.62 mm, mounted coaxially to the right, can fire standard NATO 7.62 51 mm ammunition and has a maximum rate of fire of 800 rounds per minute. In the event of a power outage, the turret has a manual backup.
The vehicle can also be equipped with an anti-tank guided missile launcher. At Eurosatory 2016, the demonstrator vehicle was outfitted with a twin-round launcher for the Spike-LR anti-tank guided missile.
