A desert country, the United Arab Emirates is nothing less than a deception. The monarchy’s rule book conceals the feeble regulations that differ from situation to situation.
In 2006, sex trafficking was declared a crime in the UAE, carrying heavy fines and prison sentences. But, sex trafficking and prostitution remain an open secret in the country.
Illicit networks operating in the UAE had been playing on the financial desperation of African women, and forcing them into prostitution by the means of threats and violence.
In 2023, an exclusive report revealed that a network had been luring African women to Dubai, and forcing them into sexual slavery in backstreets, brothels, dance clubs, bars, and hotels.
The network’s ringleader was identified as a Nigerian woman, Christy Gold, officially named Christiana Jacob Uadiale. A Nigerian who came to Dubai in 2009, Gold was facing sex trafficking charges in Nigeria.
An anti-trafficking activist, Angus Thomas was on a one-day layover to the UAE, when he was offered sex by 19-year-old Nigerian woman. He declined and asked to help her return home.
The girl informed about Gold, who was controlling 22 other women. Gold and her brother worked as sex workers in Dubai and tortured women by starving them, flogging them, and putting chilli paste in their genitals and eyes. African women, mostly from Nigeria, said they were warned to follow what Gold wanted, or they’d be killed. A Nigerian woman trafficked by Gold said,
“Every time we don’t bring money, they would beat us, put pepper in our vagina, pepper in our eyes… Many of us had wounds, but we weren’t taken to hospitals because they don’t want people to know what they were doing to us.”
The Emirates’ sex industry thrives in dance clubs, bars and spas. It also follows a hierarchy based on the complexion of women, where light-skinned women offer their services to wealthy customers at high-end venues and dark-skinned women serve low-income migrant workers in alleys and street corners. The UAE’s population comprises of 90% expats, of which 69% is male.
The regime deals with the demography by allowing sex trade as a way to pacify male workers. It reflects the UAE’s hypocrisy, where if shows intolerance for human trafficking under its Islamic laws, yet allows the heinous crime that is exploiting several women In reality, the UAE fails miserably in protecting foreign workers and providing them basic freedoms.
