Monoculture, simply put, is the cultivation of a single crop over a large area for several years. Both the 1000-hectare corn field and the 10-hectare organic cabbage field are monoculture. When talking about monoculture crops, it is important to note that even if a different culture is planted in a given field each year, the concept of growing a single crop in a single field at a time is still referred to as "monoculture".
This approach to farming formed the backbone of modern agriculture, providing us with the first food staples such as corn, wheat and rice on a large scale. But monoculture is not the only player in the field, there is another player; polyculture
Polyculture technique is an agricultural practice that involves growing multiple or mixed crops in the same field or in a particular area. It is known to mimic the diversity of natural ecosystems. Multiple planting, intercropping, companion planting, beneficial weeds and alley planting are part of polyculture. This technique uses the given space, nutrients and energy in a balanced way. It is like a buffet offering a variety of dishes instead of a single dish.
