This video provides a tutorial on Regulation of Glycogen Metabolism during fed and fasting state. Control of glycogen metabolism involves the reciprocal regulation of glycogen synthase and glycogen phosphorylase enzymes, rate-limiting enzymes for glycogenesis and glycogenolysis, respectively. When blood glucose levels are high during fed state, the beta cells are pancreas release insulin. Insulin then binds to its receptor tyrosine kinase on the surface of hepatocytes and muscle cells and triggers a signaling cascade that culminates int eh activation of glycogen synthase and inactivation of glycogen phosphorylase. When blood glucose levels are low, the alpha cells of the pancreas release glucagon. Glucagon then binds to its G protein-coupled receptor on the surface of hepatocytes (not muscle cells), which triggers a signaling cascade that leads to the inactivation of glycogen synthase and activation of glycogen phosphorylase.
