Many Americans feel pretty lousy this winter with a common cold or influenza virus, and seek medical attention to help with symptoms. Antibiotics – which are used to treat bacterial infections such as pneumonia – won't help colds, flu and most sore throats. Mayo Clinic experts says antibiotics are important drugs; however, overuse has led to antibiotic resistance.
