Almost as soon as the Spanish Civil War broke out Franco immediately realized that he would need help from abroad. The Republican navy had essentially sealed his half of the uprising on the southern side of the strait of Gibraltar and he had no feasible way of crossing in a timely fashion. By the time he crossed with the few planes he had, it would be far too late. The Germans and Italians were quickly asked for help and Franco got far more than he asked for.
Hitler chose to help Franco's cause and gave the Caudillo double what he asked for, soon enough there were German planes ferrying the legionaries and Moroccans across the strait by the dozen. But how did these transport duties end up with the Germans having their very own legion, consisting of 10,000's of men, fighting the Nationalist cause? This is the complete story of the Condor Legion.
