STORYLINE:
Director Ken Loach, long time Cannes regular, returns to the festival with “The Old Oak," which premiered in competition for the Palme d'Or, Friday (26 May 2023)
The drama marks the British filmmaker's 15th film to be selected for Cannes' main competition. He has won the coveted top award twice - in 2016 for "I, Daniel Blake," and in 2006 for "The Wind that Shakes the Barley."
Written by longtime Loach collaborator Paul Laverty, "The Old Oak" takes its title from the last remaining pub of a village in northeast England. Closing mines have led to many younger residents moving away, while what's left of the once-thriving community harbors a growing sense of resentment. The cheap housing available in the wake of the exodus makes the village an ideal place for Syrian refugees living in Britain - but how will they be received?
"The Old Oak" is one of 21 films competing for the Palme dOr.
