March 11 is World Plumbing Day! It is a day to raise awareness and importance for indoor plumbing.
Before indoor plumbing was widely introduced in California in the 1870s (the Governor’s Mansion built in 1877 in Sacramento being one of the first houses in the city with indoor plumbing), sanitation was a major problem, especially in growing cities.
For today, Howard letterpress printed an image of something you would get water from before indoor plumbing, a water pump. The image was printed from an electrotype (copy of a woodcut) from the Lewis Winter Collection. This cut was made 125-130 years ago and was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press.
