Abdominoplasty: Pregnancy After A Tummy Tuck | Aesthetic Surgical Images
The vast majority of women who undergo abdominoplasty surgery have made a decision not to have additional children. Occasionally though, they do decide to increase the size of their family and have additional children. In some cases, they even become pregnant by accident. When this situation arises, abdominoplasty does not negatively impact the quality of the pregnancy. The abdomen under these circumstances is able to expand in a normal manner to accommodate growth, and the pregnancy can be carried to term. Unfortunately, the pregnancy does have a negative impact on the aesthetics of the abdominal wall. In many cases, pregnancy recreates the original deformity. This often results in loose, saggy skin, weakness of the underlying muscles and stretch marks.
Because of the time, cost, pain and effort that goes into having an abdominoplasty procedure, we recommend that patients be done having children before they proceed with this procedure. We also realize that throughout life, circumstances do change and patients may want to add to their family. Under these circumstances, secondary revisional surgery can be performed to correct any subsequent deformities, but it's always better to do the procedure once. It's safer to have one procedure, it's less expensive and there's only one recovery. Whenever possible, we recommend that patients be done having children before they proceed with abdominoplasty surgery.
