It is estimated that 52% of sea turtles have eaten plastic waste. These images show why. A floating plastic bag can look very similar to jellyfish, or algae which make up part of the sea turtles’ diets.
Ingesting plastic is not the only thing causing problems. Entanglement in lost or abandoned fishing nets can easily drown a turtle or prevent them from escaping predators but even the smallest piece of plastic can kill.
Sharp plastics can rupture internal organs or cause intestinal blockages leaving turtles unable to feed, resulting in starvation.
Another small part of a massive, global problem.
Many of us have ditched single use plastics and turned to reusables. We are wasting less, recycling more and sharing best practices with our friends and families. It is SO great to see...but it is not enough. The government needs to be a part of the solution. It is important to show our support for bills like EACP-16 to ban single use plastics on Maui and to push for better recycling and composting programs.
