The Beacons Reservoir, also known as Llyn y Fan Fawr, is a man-made lake located in the Brecon Beacons National Park, in South Wales, United Kingdom. It is situated in the upper Tawe Valley, near the village of Libanus and Pont ar Daf, which is one of the main starting points for hikers who want to climb Pen y Fan, the highest mountain in South Wales.
The reservoir was constructed in the early 20th century to supply water to the industrial areas of South Wales, particularly the nearby town of Merthyr Tydfil. It covers an area of approximately 34 hectares and has a maximum depth of around 11 meters.
Today, the Beacons Reservoir is a popular destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, and birdwatching. The surrounding area is home to a variety of wildlife, including buzzards, red kites, and otters.
Hikers can access the reservoir via a number of trails, including the popular Beacons Way and the Taff Trail. From the reservoir, there are also several hiking routes that lead up to the nearby peaks of Pen y Fan, Corn Du, and Cribyn.
