The statuesque Mountain Gum at Kew Gardens is native to south east Australia and Tasmania. Also known as white gum, kindling gum, and broad-leaved ribbon gum, it is frost and drought tolerant, sun loving, and fast growing, providing a haven to wildlife in its native environment. Its scientific name Eucalyptus dalrympleana honours Richard Dalrymple-Hay (1861-1943) a prominent Australian botanical collector, conservationist, and forester. The tree was planted in 1972 by horticultural student Simon Goodenough, latterly awarded RHS Associate of Honour for distinguished service to horticulture.
