After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Congress approved the creation of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps in May 1942, to address manpower shortages and utilize women’s skills as contribution during World War II.
More than 35,000 women from all over the country applied for less than 1,000 anticipated positions.
The first contingent of Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps personnel arrived at Great Britian in May 1943.
Their duties included serving as clerks, typists, telephone operators, mechanics, and a wide range of other jobs.
Service in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps showcased women’s direct contributions to the U.S. war effort and their support to the overall mission without engaging in direct combat.
Following the Vietnam War, the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corp was disbanded in 1978, when the Army unified the service of both men and women into its ranks.
However, the WAAC’s legacy continues to serve as a historic lineage for women’s service in the armed forces.
