We shouldn't be trying to respect opinions, we should be respecting how opinions are formed.
The issue that we face … is not that we're not respecting each other's opinions, the issue is that there are so many poorly formed opinions that are seeking respect that's not deserved.
Opinions are not equal.
Some people know more than others … are more informed than others … have worked harder to obtain more knowledge than others, and, when it comes down to it … some people and some opinions are worth listening to more than others.
If someone is being honest, moral, and acting in good faith, then their opinion is probably worthy of respect.
If someone bases their opinion on conspiracies or disinformation. If their opinion is harmful to others. If they think white supremacy is AOK, then their opinion doesn't deserve much respect.
If you respect a person, you should let them know when their opinion is not worth respecting. At least give them a chance to reconsider.
