Early treatment however is proven to reduce the risk of blindness or vision loss upto 90%. However lack of screening and treatment facilities has lead to a situation where many undiagnosed and uncontrolled diabetics present with diabetic retinopathy with vision threatening complications. However if identified early and given proper treatment we could prevent further vision loss and blindness. Statistics say that 1 in about 2 diabetics remain undiagnosed and 1 in every 3 diabetics has never had an eye examination done and 1 in every 5 diabetics have some amount of diabetic retinopathy in the initial diagnosis. So it is very important that they get their dilated retina evaluation or a diabetic retinopathy screening done soon after a yearly evaluation or yearly thereafter or earlier as the doctor advices. The national programme of control of blindness recommend an opportunistic approach for the screening of diabetic retinopathy, that is every opportunity of contact with high risk diabetic s should be utilized for screening detection and further referral to higher centes regarding their diabetic retinopathy. Along with this creating awareness among general public, improving health seeking behavior and community participation plays a major role in preventing avoidable blindness related to diabetic retinopathy.
