If your child's classroom is frequently out of ratio, how do you handle it?
1. The first time you notice, assume the best and ask the teacher for an explanation.
👉🏼 Example:
🗣 Parent: "I noticed there are a lot of kids here today, but the preschool ratio is 10:1..."
🗣 Teacher: "Yes, 4 children were just dropped off around the same time. I called for an assistant teacher to come help; he/she will be here shortly."
(Perfectly fine explanation.)
2. If ratios are frequently broken without a sufficient explanation from the teacher, bring up your concerns to the director.
👉🏼 Example:
🗣 Parent: "I understand the state-mandated ratios for my son's toddler age group is 4:1, but I've noticed several afternoons where there are 7 children in the classroom and one teacher. Since ratios are put in place to maintain sufficient supervision and for safety, I wanted to bring this to your attention in attempts to rectify the situation."
▪️ Hear out the director for an explanation. However, if the director somehow justifies the situation or does not appear to seek to rectify the situation...
3. Search for another quality childcare or preschool provider.
4. If switching programs isn't a possibility at the moment, or you really like your child's teacher/program and don't want to switch programs, call the state department that licenses the program & submit an anonymous complaint about the center being out of ratio. The state will handle the situation from there.
TIP: Do not share your name as they sometimes don't keep it anonymous, and that can lead to relationship issues between you and your provider.
No matter which age group your child may be enrolled in, maintaining ratios at all times is a sign of a high-quality program that values child safety and supervision. If a center is in the habit of breaking ratios, it is a red flag and typically indicates a low-quality program and potentially unsafe environment for your child.
